How do you get more shit done in 4 hours than 92% of people do in 3 days?
The Pomodoro Technique, baby.
Ali Abdaal, a fellow digital entrepreneur, is huge on productivity and shares many of his techniques on his podcast and YouTube channel. Some would even call him the ultimate productivity guru.
In fact, the dude has scaled multiple streams of income to $1 million– all while being a full-time medical student. (Of course, he’s a doctor now, but that’s another story.)
Bottom line: his insane level of productivity can be attributed to the Pomodoro Technique. This guy absolutely swears by it.
Step 1: Pick a task.
Just ONE task. It is the most crucial step in the process and is often overlooked.
If you don’t pick a task, you’ll end up checking your email, hopping between different tasks, or putting off the one with the most resistance.
The point is to focus on one singular task and build much-needed momentum to power through.
Step 2: Start the time.
Set a timer for 25 minutes. This, according to science, is the optimal time to stay 100% focused.
Start the clock, get to your chosen task, and don’t stop working on it until your timer goes off.
Step 3: Short break.
Take a quick 5-minute break when you’re done. Avoid energy-draining or attention-stealing tasks like scrolling through social media, doing exercise, or stuffing your face with food.
The point is to have a RESTORATIVE break so you can keep going.
What exactly should you do to restore your energy? You could:
- Stretch.
- Drink water.
- Get some sun.
- Or eat a small snack.
Step 4: Do another pomodoro.
Set another 25-minute timer and get crackin’. Take another 5-minute break when done.
Keep at it: one task, 25 minutes, 100% focus, then take an energizing break for 5 minutes.
Step 5: Lather, rinse, repeat.
After you have completed four consecutive cycles– these pomodoros– give yourself a longer break of 30 minutes.
This is a REVITALIZING break to give you more energy.
Once you’re well-rested, hop to it once more.
That’s all there is to it!
