George Mack runs a digital marketing agency in the UK, and shares his insights on marketing and technology.
He recently talked about eight powerful marketing and technology trends that can help us make sense of the future:
- The World is Flat
- The First Teenage Self-Made Billionaire
- The Dating Vacuum
- Slowmadism > Nomadism
- Marketing is the Most Important Skill of the Next Decade
- Tupac Will Come Back
- Migration-as-a-Service
- Pay Attention to What’s More Important (declining assets vs compounding assets)
1. The World is Flat:
The winners of remote work will be skillful people in the developing world.
The losers of remote work will be unskilled people in the developed world.
2. The First Teenage Self-Made Billionaire:
Trend 1 – homeschooling growing rapidly.
Trend 2 – the ability to start a business online without anyone’s permission.
Conclusion: a teenager will become a self-made billionaire in the next decade.
3. The Dating Vacuum:
Fewer people in offices and bars lead to a vacuum for dating options.
So expect a ton of dating app innovations to fill this void.
(I suspect we will look back on today’s dating apps like we look back on 1970s video games. –George)
4. Slowmadism > Nomadism:
Being a digital nomad that moves every two weeks makes for an amazing Instagram page, but a terrible life.
Why? Because too much time is spent packing suitcases and traveling.
Whereas Slowmadism is all about moving between two to three locations per year. And this trend will only become more popular.
5. Marketing is the Most Important Skill of the Next Decade:
Here’s why–
Trend 1 – the digital economy is now 4+ billion people and growing
Trend 2 – trillions (of dollars) are about to be inherited by a digital generation from their boomer parents.
6. Tupac Will Come Back:
Now, people are focusing on AI writing and images, but music hasn’t been priced in yet.
And so, an algorithm trained on their music will create new tracks from Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, and other music greats that have passed away.
7. Migration-as-a-Service:
Relocating countries is a nightmare. It’s a bloated bureaucratic process filled with 1970s paperwork.
There will be a billion-dollar company that fixes this problem
8. Pay Attention to What’s More Important:
Declining assets:
- office politics
- alcohol consumption
- who your parents are
- middle management
- where you went to college
Compounding assets:
- high output
- writing skills
- the ability to self-teach
- where you hang out online
- who’s in your group chat
